Chance to Shine

Good Speaking Competition

On Friday the 4th of November, the annual Good Speaking Competition was held at school. All children in Years 2 to 6 learnt a poem off by heart. They then performed their poem to the year group and sixteen children were selected from each year to go forward into the semi-finals. Phase Leaders heard those children recite their poems and they chose eight to represent the year group in the final. In the final, judges Mr and Mrs Finnigan and Mrs Elliott chose the best performance from each year. The finalists were Bobbi T (year 2), Rhys A (year 3), Mischa M (year 4), Kyran R (year 5) and Matilda S (year 6) pictured above. These five children all recited their poems for the final time and the judges decided that the overall winner was Kyran from year 5, with his poem, ‘The Myth of the Minotaur’ by Paul Perro.

Leeds Peace Poetry Competition

We were very excited to be invited to attend the Gala Awards Evening for the Leeds Peace Poetry Competition held in Leeds University's Great Hall on Wednesday 23rd November. The competition is aimed at increasing skills in poetry and to encourage people to explore peace and justice issues through creative writing. The theme of this year’s competition was refugees.

Three children from Year 6 had their poems shortlisted. The school was also shortlisted for the primary school overall award in recognition of the sixteen poems submitted to the competition

We are very pleased to have won the overall school prize which was collected by Mrs Rook and are extremely proud that Louis won third prize for his poem in the primary section. A huge well done to all who participated.
